Ethiopia faces pressing development challenges in agriculture, healthcare, energy, and governance, driven by climate vulnerability, limited infrastructure, and a shortage of AI expertise. While the country’s 10-Year Development Plan aligns with key SDGs, progress is slowed by gaps in data, policy, and inclusive technology.

The proposed lab at Addis Ababa University seeks to address these issues by developing ethical, context-specific AI solutions—such as precision agriculture tools, AI-powered healthcare systems, and data-driven governance platforms. The lab will also build local capacity through graduate training and regional collaboration, focusing on inclusive, ethical AI applications in healthcare, agriculture, governance, and energy, while fostering regional partnerships and supporting policy development to ensure sustainable impact.
